In the 1990s, during the wave of reform and opening up, Xiangzhou district, Zhuhai pioneered the construction of a coastal scenic route—Lovers' Road. This scenic route, reflecting the spirit of reform, has become a symbol of the area.

Initially, in the early 1980s, it was just a barren beach. The iconic "Statue of Fisher Girl" stood alone in Xianglu Bay for nearly a decade, but visitors had to walk over 30 minutes to see it. However, with the economic boom in 1991, a decision was made to build a road connecting Zhongshan and Guangzhou, preserving the original coastline and revitalizing Lovers' Road as a popular natural attraction now.

In August 1992, the middle section of Lovers’ Road was completed, enabling tour bus services to reach the "Statue of Fisher Girl". By the end of 1992, the northern section was finished, and by 1999, the southern section was connected, making Lovers' Road fully operational.

Today, this 55-kilometer coastal scenic route is not only the world's longest seaside scenic highway but also a romantic axis linking Zhuhai's past, present, and future. It has become a world-class romantic scenic route, witnessing Zhuhai's cultural progress.

In the 21st century, Xiangzhou has developed its cultural tourism resources and optimized services, transforming Lovers' Road into a tourism brand. Data shows that during the May Day holiday this year, Zhuhai welcomed 2.2 million tourists, with Lovers' Road attracting 1.48 million, confirming its appeal as a top attraction in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area.
